Iceland Car Rentals

RENT A CAR IN ICELAND

Iceland is a fascinating country with beautiful sceneries. Each point of the mainland is a new adventure for travelers. The combination of volcanic landscape and splendid valleys is unique worldwide. To discover the beauty of Iceland is preferable for visitors to rent a car. There are several options for car rental in Keflavik airport or downtown in Reykjavik. Globocars.com offers information for car rental in Iceland and provides you with countless vehicles types, although we recommend you to consider renting a jeep 4x4 for your outdoor adventures. The best season for visiting Iceland is between the end of May and middle of September. During this period it never becomes pitch dark, which means that the movement of the sun in the sky creates a miraculous atmosphere.

The local currency is the Icelandic krona (1 EURO ≈ 143 ISL). You may exchange currency either at the airport upon arrival or at the local banks. Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted and ATMs can be found anywhere. No need for international driving license to rent a car in Iceland, but probably insurance for the vehicle is required against damages from the volcanic ash. Gas stations are easy to find but Europeans should be careful with petrol as Icelanders calculate it in gallons, not liters.

Start your tour from the capital of Iceland, Reykjavik. Here you'll find great restaurants, bars, museums, theaters and galleries. Laugavegur is the most commercial street in Reykjavik with countless shops for all kinds of taste. Don’t skip a visit to Hallgrimskirkja church (the tower is the landmark of the city, as it’s visible from any point of the city). We also propose a stop at the Imagine Peace Tower, an artwork designed as a lighthouse/tribute to world peace. There are many parking areas in Reykjavik with specialized parking zones. The automated parking machines accept only Icelandic coins. You can also park just outside of the city, as it’s just a stone’s throw away from the heart of the city.

The first excursion should definitely be at the Blue Lagoon, located 40 minutes away from Reykjavik by car. The Blue Lagoon is one of the most popular geothermal spas, set in a lava field at Grindavik, on the Reykjanes Peninsula. The lagoon is an artificial pond filled with water that’s refreshed every two days from the Svartsengi power plant. The average water temperature is 37-39 °C. The water is rich in minerals like sulfur and silicon, so do not waste any time, stop your car at a proximity and take a healing dive in the most peculiar spa in the world! The entrance cost starts from 40 EUR and the luxury package costs 195 EUR (including lunch at Lava restaurant). Check online for pre-bookings and special offers.

The favorite sightseeing tour of most visitors is the Golden Circle. Pick up your car early in the morning and spend as much time as possible at this amazing park with the unique geysers, the impressive waterfall and the oldest parliament in the world. Total driving time for a complete tour of the Golden Circle: 8 hours approximately. First stop the Thingvellir National Park. The park is located 49 km east of Reykjavik, in an active volcanic area and it covers 24000 hectares of which 9270 constitute a World Heritage Property. The park is surrounded by majestic mountains, while the southern end faces the lake Thingvallavatn. This is an excellent opportunity for diving and camping.

Hit the Laugarvatnsvegur highway (route 37). Following an hour’s driving you reach the Gullfoss waterfalls. Gullfoss, which means golden waterfall, is offering a spectacular view of nature. You can also rent a snowmobile from Gullfoss café and tour the east side of Langjokull glacier. Make your next stop at the geothermal area, Geysir, with the famous Strokkur. Geysir is located at the Haukadalur valley to the southwestern Iceland. Geysir is inactive since 2000 but Strokkur erupts every 10 minutes, thus it’s the area’s main attraction.

Driving along the eastern part of Iceland provides you with memorable view to spectacular fiords and magnificent fishing villages. Upon arrival to the lake Myvatn, you will experience the exploration of unusual natural wonders, the Krafla volcano, the Namaskard pass and Skutustadir craters. Make this a half-day tour around the lake and don’t forget to visit Godafoss, the waterfalls of God on your return.

The wonders of Iceland are best enjoyed by renting a car and arranging your one day or half day excursions stress-free and at your ease. Globocars.com provides you with the easiest way to select the car of your preference at the cheapest prices ever.  Book on-line the vehicle that you need (4x4 jeep, camper, van, diesel car etc) and don’t forget to present at the rental office a valid credit card for guarantee and your driver’s license. Because of the particularity of the Icelandic volcanic landscapes its best that you considered the option of booking CDW (collision damage waiver) insurance for your car rental. Ask your provider for further guidelines about this option.
