RENT A CAR IN MEXICO

Unlike the common beliefs and fears Mexico is an amazing and pretty safe tourist destination with gentle people, good infrastructure and unique sights of archaeological and natural interest. The Globocars.com experts travelled to Mexico and they totally recommend this exotic destination. Check our list of suggestions, dos & don’ts, and prepare yourself for a great adventure! Warning: Mexico is a huge country so you will probably need to rent a car in order to be able to see as much as possible. Even then, you will most likely decide that you need to travel twice or more to enjoy most of its wonders at ease.

The Globocars.com team travelled to Mexico City by airplane and stayed there for about three days. Mexico city has the second largest metro system in Central and North America (after the New York City subway), so no need to rent a car to stroll around the Mexico City Metropolitan Cathedral, the Templo Mayor, Zocalo, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Condesa, Garibaldi square, paseo de la Reforma etc. Avoid the metro during peak times (around 9 am and 5 pm) as it gets really crowded. Take a taxi instead which is an inexpensive alternative. Plan your stay in Mexico DF carefully because this is a huge city with many attractions and it is highly possible that you will have to skip a few places of interest.

Once you ticked the major Mexico DF attractions off your bucket list get ready to rent a car and check the nearby places of interest. The best deals are online, so we recommend you to visit globocars.com and select among a variety of cars to hire. Almost all hotels and hostels have free Wi-Fi connection and surely there will be an internet café nearby in case your hotel’s internet connection is slow. So, avoid showing yourself at a rental car agency at the airport, at any hotel or other touristy places, because you risk being overcharged. Book the vehicle of your preference online and make sure you follow our instructions:

Like in almost all countries worldwide the driver has to be at least 25 years of age. Additionally, some of the car rental companies require the driver to have at least a few years of driving experience, otherwise extra fees apply. Your driving license has to be valid, in western characters and with a recent photo of yours; otherwise you will have to present an extra document with a photo (e.g. passport, ID card). In case you are about to cover long distances and need permission for second driver, plus a few extra amenities that might not be included in the original booking (e.g. DVD player, roof rack etc.) check the additional costs. If you wish to drop off the vehicle to a different location than the one you picked it up, extra charges apply that might not worth to be paid considering that the usual fee is 1USD per mile, so if you intend to leave the car at a distance of 100 miles the applicable fee is 100 USD. The longer the rental period the cheaper it gets, which makes it enticing to rent a car for more than 5 days and hit the Mayan “ruta” to Oaxaca and beyond instead of having to adapt your travel schedule according to the buses timetable.

Make sure you thoroughly inspect the vehicle upon pick up and before drop off, even check underneath the car, as the numerous speed bumps of the Mexican roads inevitably cause damages. Before signing or purchasing any extra insurance read beforehand the terms of your personal insurance in case you are covered in some aspects. Anyway, third party insurance coverage in Mexico is mandatory so in case it is not included in your online booking, ask for more information about it. You will need a valid credit card for the car rental (debit cards are not accepted). Upon car pick up and before signing any documents ask for the terms and conditions in order to check the small print. Most likely the small print will be given to you in Spanish, so ask for a copy in English. All major car rental companies operate in Mexico, like hertz, SIXT, Alamo, America, Dollar, Thrifty etc. Prices get cheaper during shoulder and low season. The Globocars.com experts travelled to Mexico on November and it was less crowded, with sunny days and best deals on car rentals, so we suggest you to consider traveling before or after peak season.
